Filmmakers' Access Policies

The wide range of equipment we have available here at Pittsburgh Filmmakers can be empower just about anyone to make art. However, with great power comes great responsibility. Read on to find out what you can expect from us, and what we expect from you.

General Access Policies

  • Equipment Access is granted only after a member or student demonstrates proficiency with a test-out. To schedule a test-out, please call the equipment office at 412-681-9500. Students may skip the test-out if they have taken a Filmmakers class with the equipment and received a grade of C or higher.
  • Within the disciplines of Photography, Video, Film and Digital, There are levels that determine exactly what you have access to. To read more about access levles, click here.
  • Equipment is available to members and students for the sole purpose of creating noncommercial projects.
  • royalties, awards and grant income are not considered commercial income.
  • Equipment is to be used exclusively by the student or member who is accessing it. Neither students nor members may check out equipment for use by other persons.
  • Pittsburgh Filmmakers reserves the right to fine for any rules broken.
  • Equipment access will be denied and grades will be withheld until all fines are paid in full.
  • Should a student/member encounter a problem with a piece of Pittsburgh Filmmakers' equipment, they should return the equipment as soon as possible or call the Equipment Office to report the problem. Under no circumstances can the student/member or anyone else disassemble or attempt to repair the piece of equipment.

How to Borrow Equipment for Out-of-House Use

Borrowing equipment for Out-of-House use is a process comprised of three procedures:

  1. Make A Reservation Reservations may be made in-person during the Hours of Operation, or by phone by calling 412-681-9500.
    *reservations can not be made Monday before 4pm or Friday after 2pm
  2. Check Out the Equipment You must have your Filmmakers ID card to do this. No exceptions. Be sure to check your equipment before you take it out of the building. Equipment must be checked out by the student/member that made the reservation. Equipment check-out must be done at the following times:

    Monday: 4pm - 8pm
    Tuesday - Thursday: 4pm - 8pm
    Friday: 2pm - 6:30pm
    Saturday & Sunday: 12pm - 2pm
  3. Check In the Equipment Equipment Check-In must be dones at the following times:

    Monday - Thursday: by 4pm
    Frriday: by 2pm
    Saturday & Sunday: by 12pm

Hours of Operation

Monday - Thursday: 10am - 9pm
Friday: 10am - 6:30pm
Saturday & Sunday: 10am - 2pm
